St. Peter's Basilica

This is one of the most amazing buildings we have ever been in.  It is enormous in size and grandeur.
A truly amazing place to visit.
It is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic sites.

Designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St Peter's is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and remains one of the largest churches in the world.

The dome of St. Peter's rises to a total height of 136.57 metres (448.1 ft) from the floor of the basilica to the top of the external cross. It is the tallest dome in the world.

Bernini's first work at St. Peter's was to design the baldacchino, a pavilion-like structure 30 metres (98 ft) tall and claimed to be the largest piece of bronze in the world, which stands beneath the dome and above the altar.

In Roman Catholic tradition, the basilica is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus.

There are over 100 tombs within St. Peter's Basilica (extant to various extents), many located in the
Vatican grotto, beneath the Basilica. These include 91 popes.
